Carolina Loss Tarnishes Fine Game by Mathis
Conditions were not ideal but St. Louis and Carolina were able to put their game in the books.

The St. Louis Rams withstood a fine game by Carolina first baseman Rich Mathis at Ericsson Stadium, to upend the Panthers, 13-6. Mathis was 4 for 5 with 2 home runs and a double. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Ramon Rivera, the winner, goes to 1-3. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, with 3 walks and 1 strikeout over 5.1 innings.

St. Louis right fielder Kyle Cummings delivered a 3-run home run in the top of the fifth. Overall, he went 4 for 6, picking up 1 home run, 2 singles, and 1 double. He scored 2 runs and knocked in 4.

"We maximized our offense today," said St. Louis skipper Dan Odom. "That makes everyone's life easier."
