Arizona got a decent performance from pitcher Luis Puccini, but it wasn't enough to beat the Carolina Panthers. Carolina won the Sun Devil Stadium contest, 7-5. Puccini threw 8.0 innings allowing 4 runs for the losing team. The win went to Willie Lara in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Roberto Quintana took the loss. The Cardinals fall to 4-8 and continue to sputter in the early going.

Carolina took advantage of an error in the top of the ninth inning. The game was tied, 5-5, when Jorge Casas hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put the Panthers in front, 6-5.

Casas told the Carolina Daily: "I was born for the big stage."
